Zentralalpenweg Day 8 (19km)

Zentralalpenweg Day 8 (19km)

Learned a new word today from the trashy free newspaper Heute: Graupelschauer. Graupel is something in between snow, hail and sleet, and as the paper also says, it was certainly Saukalt with max 3°C.

The most-read "newspaper" in Austria, but only because it is free and on every street. A memento of our second Corona Spring.

This was actually the most pleasant hike so far, starting and finishing in soft mixed forests with, in between, some lovely rolling farmland and a ridge with super views on each side (we must go back when the skies are clearer). Unfortunately there was quite a bit on tarred roads, though they were pretty much traffic free. Apart from the crossing of the noisy Sudautobahn the day was very peaceful and windmill and electricity pylon free.

Two trains and a bus took us back to Krumbach Markt for the start and a bus and two trains got us back to Vienna from Mönichkirchen 6 hours later. The "official" stage would have taken us half way up the Hochwechsel to a mountain hut for the night, but it will be a while before they open during this Corona pandemic, so we stopped at the last public transport possibility and were home in a couple of hours.
