Zentralalpenweg Day 4 (26km)
This was another pleasant forest walk through the Leithagebirge. More undulating than the previous day but very peaceful with pleasant bird song and many more snowdrops. We didn't see a soul until later in the day when approaching Eisenstadt, which, given it was a Sunday was surprising. The weather started and ended sunny with clouds in the middle. As soon as a breeze arose and the sun was hidden, it was quite chilly.
The whole forest and indeed apparently most of Burgenland, including several castles, is owned by the Esterhazy group. The land where my yacht club is situated (Breitenbrunn) belongs to them. They will be knocking it all down later this year in order to build luxury apartments for rental. I hate them.
There was a short section on a road. I could have filled a bin bag with the litter thrown out of passing cars in that 1km stretch. As usual, the worst offender is the Red Bull cans followed by beer cans and plastic coke bottles. I really don't understand how people can simply wind down their window and chuck out their empties like that. I hate them too.
After 25km, with a sprint finish in order to catch the train, the knees and ankles where quite sore but as usual it was great to sit in a comfortable train for the short trip home. This was the first time on a different train route as we are now west of Neusiedlersee. I think it will get harder now to find public transport to and from the end points so might need to wait until accommodation is opened up again.
