Leaking Gearbox Oil

Leaking Gearbox Oil
That's not an o-ring but an x-ring

After having topped up the gearbox oil recently I noticed a puddle of it on the garage floor the next day. It was steadily dripping out through the kickstart spline.

As usual nothing was straight-forward. Three of the bolts on the cover appeared to be 5 or 6mm Allen bolts and came out fine with the 5mm key. I couldn't get the key into the other 2 and thought the heads were just mangled, but when advised to use the correct 3/16th key they came out fine.

I was about to buy a tap and re-thread the holes but came to the conclusion that they have obviously been fitted with inserts at some point, so the cover will remain with 3 metric and 2 imperial bolts.

The bush and seal were loose on the spline, so I fitted a new seal and stuck the bush back with some Loctite. So far it is not leaking.

The bike was not running great. I checked the sparkplugs which were totally black with soot. When I went to adjust the mixture screw on the carbs I found they were both right in! Forgot to reset after cleaning the carbs. Turned out about 2 turns and bike is good again.

Except for the petrol leaking from the float bowl when bike is on side stand.... I am thinking of splashing out for new carbs and cables, but they are not cheap. Will keep an eye on the petrol for now.
